2008-2018Last updated: March 2026
2008-2018 · 1.3 JTDM / JTDM-2 (85-95 hp) Fiat MultiJet 4-cylinder turbodiesel
Alfa Romeo's compact supermini powered by the widely-used Fiat 1.3 MultiJet diesel. This engine is found across dozens of Fiat, Opel, and Suzuki models, which means parts are plentiful and specialists know it well. The MiTo offers Italian styling in a small, economical package. Early cars used an M20 six-speed gearbox, while post-2010 models switched to a more robust C510 five-speed.
Proven MultiJet engine, parts widely available
Excellent fuel economy (4-5 L/100 km)
Electric power steering column failures
DPF and EGR clog with city driving
Buy if: You drive regular longer journeys, can verify the timing chain and steering column are healthy, and want an economical Italian diesel.
Avoid if: You mainly drive short urban trips under 10 km (DPF will clog) or need a car that never visits a workshop.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
Known Issues most common first
Chain stretches and tensioner loses pressure, causing cold start rattle typically after 100,000 km · more· less
The 1.3 MultiJet uses a timing chain rather than a belt, but this chain is not maintenance-free. The tensioner can lose hydraulic pressure over time, and the tensioner mounting bolts have been known to work loose, allowing the chain to develop slack. This is most noticeable as a distinctive rattling noise for a few seconds to half a minute on cold start. The issue typically appears between 100,000 and 150,000 km, but can occur earlier if oil changes have been neglected or the wrong oil grade was used. Replacement is labour-intensive because the sump, turbo, and catalytic converter must be removed to access the chain. Independent workshop costs are around €600-900, while an Alfa dealer quotes €1,000-1,500. Ignoring chain rattle risks the chain skipping teeth and causing catastrophic valve-to-piston contact, which destroys the engine.
Torque position sensor degrades, causing groaning, jerky assistance, or complete steering failure warning · more· less
This is one of the most well-known MiTo-specific faults. The electric power steering (EPS) column contains a torque position sensor that degrades over time, resulting in groaning vibration when turning, intermittent heavy or jerky steering, and eventually the steering failure warning light (fault code C1002). The issue can appear at any mileage but becomes more common after 60,000-80,000 km. A new column from Alfa Romeo costs over €900 plus labour and coding. However, specialist remanufacturers offer rebuilt columns for €300-500 fitted, often with lifetime warranties. These rebuilt units use higher-rated components than the original and self-calibrate when installed, so no dealer coding is required. Second-hand columns are risky as the failure will recur.
Diesel particulate filter blocks when regeneration cycles cannot complete on short journeys · more· less
The 1.3 JTDM requires sustained driving at motorway speeds (15-20 minutes above 60 km/h) for DPF regeneration to complete. Cars used predominantly for short urban trips accumulate soot faster than it can burn off. Each incomplete active regeneration attempt dumps unburned diesel into the engine oil, raising the oil level and diluting lubrication. Symptoms include the DPF warning light, loss of power, and limp mode. A forced regeneration at a garage costs approximately €80-150. Professional DPF cleaning runs €200-400. If the filter is beyond recovery, a replacement aftermarket DPF costs €500-1,000 fitted. Check the engine oil level carefully before purchase: if it is significantly above the maximum mark, this indicates diesel contamination from failed regeneration cycles.
Carbon deposits clog the EGR valve, causing rough idle, power loss, and engine warning light · more· less
Carbon buildup on the EGR valve is very common on the 1.3 JTDM, particularly on cars driven gently or predominantly in urban traffic. The EGR on this engine sits at the back towards the firewall, making access awkward. Symptoms include rough idle, loss of power, black smoke, and the engine management light. Cleaning the EGR valve costs €120-250 and may need repeating every 40,000-60,000 km with urban-heavy use. If the valve motor has failed or the valve body is too heavily coked, replacement costs €300-500 including labour. Regular motorway driving at higher rpm helps keep the valve clear.
6th and 5th gear bearings deteriorate on the M20 six-speed, causing whining and eventual failure · more· less
Early MiTo 1.3 JTDM models (2008-2010 with the 90 hp engine) used the GM M20 six-speed gearbox, which is closely related to the notorious M32. The output shaft bearing deteriorates because the gearbox has no oil change schedule despite running hot. Symptoms start as a faint whine when cruising in 5th or 6th gear, and the gear lever may rock back and forth when pulling away in 1st. If not addressed, the bearing disintegrates and can punch a hole through the casing. A bearing overhaul with improved bearings costs around €500-700 at a specialist. Full gearbox replacement is €800-1,200. Post-2010 cars with the C510 five-speed do not have this issue. Check which gearbox is fitted before buying.
Wastegate actuator sticks from carbon deposits, causing limp mode and boost loss · more· less
The small BorgWarner KP35/BV35 turbocharger on the 1.3 JTDM has a wastegate actuator that can seize from carbon deposits, particularly on cars driven gently at low rpm. When stuck, boost pressure is uncontrolled and the ECU puts the engine into limp mode. Cleaning the wastegate mechanism costs around €100-200. If turbo bearings are worn or the wastegate cannot be freed, a remanufactured turbo fitted costs €600-1,000 at a specialist, or up to €1,500 at an Alfa dealer. Regular spirited driving through the rev range helps prevent actuator seizure.
Copper injector washers harden over time, allowing diesel to weep and carbon to accumulate · more· less
Each injector uses a copper crush washer and a rubber seal. Over time, the copper hardens and the rubber degrades, allowing small amounts of combustion gas and diesel to leak past the injector seat. This manifests as a hissing sound from the engine bay with the engine running, diesel smell, and carbon buildup around the injectors that makes future removal difficult. Replacing all four sets of seals costs €150-300 at an independent garage. If injectors have seized from carbon, extraction adds €100-200. Proactive replacement every 80,000-100,000 km prevents the seizing problem.
Reliable engine, but needs the right driving pattern and regular maintenance
The Fiat 1.3 MultiJet in the MiTo is fundamentally robust and examples exceeding 200,000 km without major engine work exist when properly maintained. However, the engine is poorly suited to short-trip urban driving, which clogs the DPF and fouls the EGR valve. The MiTo-specific EPS steering column is the most distinctive ownership risk compared to other cars sharing this engine. Early 2008-2010 cars with the M20 gearbox carry additional bearing wear risk. Post-2010 cars with the C510 five-speed and documented service history are the safest buy.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete records from Alfa Romeo dealer or specialist essential. Oil changes every 12 months or 15,000 km are critical for this engine.
-
Tires
Check tread depth, age (date codes on sidewall), and uneven wear patterns. Standard sizes are 185/65R15 or 195/55R16.
-
Cold start
Must start engine completely cold. Listen for unusual rattling, excessive smoke, or glow plug warning light issues.
-
Test drive
Minimum 20 minutes including motorway speeds. Check for smooth turbo boost, any warning lights, and steering feel.
-
Listen for timing chain rattle on cold start
Start the engine completely cold and listen for rattling in the first 5-30 seconds. A persistent rattle indicates chain stretch or tensioner failure. This is the most important acoustic check.
-
Test power steering at low speed
Turn the steering wheel fully lock-to-lock at parking speed. Listen for groaning or vibration and feel for jerky assistance. Check the dashboard for steering warning lights. EPS column failure is very common on MiTos.
-
Check engine oil level and smell the dipstick
Oil level above maximum indicates diesel contamination from failed DPF regeneration. A strong fuel smell confirms diesel dilution, which damages the engine long-term.
