2018-present (K9) · 1.5 BlueHDi 90/120/130 hp diesel
Practical family MPV and van favourite, built on the Stellantis EMP2 platform shared with Peugeot Partner and Opel Combo. The 1.5 BlueHDi diesel is fuel-efficient and widely available in parts, but has a serious timing chain design flaw affecting engines made before January 2023. Stellantis extended coverage to 10 years for this issue, so verify service history and warranty status carefully. AdBlue and DPF systems also need attention, especially if the car is used mostly for short trips. Manual gearbox preferred over the ETG6 semi-automatic.
The 7mm camshaft chain stretches and can snap, destroying the engine · more· less
This is the single most serious issue with the 1.5 BlueHDi. The original 7mm timing chain gradually wears the camshaft sprocket teeth (developing a "shark fin" profile), stretches, and eventually snaps — causing bent valves, piston damage, or complete engine failure. Typically surfaces between 70,000-100,000 km, often announced by cold-start rattling. PSA upgraded to a stronger 8mm chain from late 2022/early 2023, requiring new camshafts, sprockets, and rocker cover. Identify your engine version by the cam housing part number: 9812647280 = old 7mm, 9830580480 = new 8mm. Stellantis extended coverage to 10 years or 150,000 miles (July 2025), covering 100% parts and labour if service history is maintained. Without coverage, a full chain kit costs approximately €1,500-2,000 in parts alone, with labour adding €600-1,000.
AdBlue / NOx system faults€250 - €1,500
NOx sensor, injector pump, and filter failures trigger warnings and eventual start prevention · more· less
The AdBlue (urea injection) system has multiple failure points: the NOx sensor can fail (dealer quotes seen at €400+ for the part alone, with labour pushing total to €1,200-1,500), the AdBlue injector pump can seize, and the filter can clog. If the system is not repaired, a countdown begins after which the engine will not start. Problems tend to appear around 60,000 km and increase significantly after 100,000 km. A recall was issued in February 2020 specifically for blocked urea injectors. Use only recommended AdBlue fluid and top up regularly.
Short trips prevent DPF regeneration, leading to progressive blockage and limp mode · more· less
The DPF requires periodic high-temperature regeneration to burn off trapped particulates. Frequent short trips or idling prevents this, causing gradual blockage. Symptoms progress from increased fuel consumption and reduced power to warning lights and limp mode. A professional DPF clean costs roughly €100, but if the filter is severely blocked or damaged, replacement runs €1,000-2,000. A recall in April 2019 addressed a plastic exhaust component that could damage the DPF. Driving at least 15-20 minutes on the motorway regularly helps maintain DPF health.
Start-stop system malfunction€200 - €500
System fails to restart or switch off automatically, often from 30,000 km onwards · more· less
The automatic start-stop system on the 1.5 BlueHDi 130 is reported to malfunction from as early as 30,000 km. Common symptoms include the engine not restarting after being stopped, or the system refusing to deactivate. Faults are weather-dependent and strongly linked to battery condition and auxiliary sensor health. A weakened 12V battery is the most common cause. Battery replacement costs €100-150; if the starter motor or related sensors are at fault, costs rise to €300-500.
Selector forks and synchronizers wear prematurely, causing difficult gear selection or skipped gears · more· less
One owner reported a selector fork failure at just 13,000 miles, with the mechanism falling apart inside the gearbox. The dealer fitted a replacement, but the same issue recurred within 13 months. Symptoms include difficulty engaging first gear, gears skipping, or grinding when shifting. The ETG6 semi-automatic variant is even less reliable — owners report hesitant shifting, clicking noises, and actuator faults. A manual gearbox rebuild or replacement typically costs €800-1,500; ETG6 mechatronic repairs can reach €1,500-2,500.
Suspension bushings (silentblocks) and stabiliser wear€300 - €800
Front and rear silentblocks and stabiliser bars wear faster than average, especially on heavily loaded cars · more· less
The Berlingo Mk3 is frequently used as a workhorse for deliveries or family hauling, accelerating suspension wear. Owners report knocking over bumps, poor handling, and uneven tyre wear as silentblocks and stabiliser links deteriorate. Front strut mounts are also a known weak point. Parts are affordable (silentblock sets from €20-60), but labour for a full front-end refresh adds €200-400. Typical onset is 80,000-120,000 km under normal use, sooner if frequently loaded.
Central locking / door wiring harness€150 - €400
Door wiring harness chafes at rubber gutter, causing intermittent central locking failure · more· less
A known wiring issue affects central locking reliability. The wiring harness running through the rubber gutter between the driver's door and body can chafe or corrode over time, breaking wires that control locking signals. Symptoms include the key fob flashing lights but failing to lock/unlock the driver's door, or doors locking inconsistently. The fix typically involves repairing or replacing the affected wiring section. Parts cost €50-100, with labour adding €100-250 depending on accessibility.
Practical and affordable, but the timing chain demands vigilance
The Berlingo Mk3 is an excellent value proposition as a family MPV or small business workhorse. Parts are plentiful and shared across the Stellantis group (Peugeot Partner, Opel Combo). However, the 1.5 BlueHDi timing chain flaw is a genuine concern on pre-2023 engines. Stellantis's 10-year extended coverage helps significantly — but only if service history is complete and repairs go through an authorised dealer. Prioritise manual gearbox cars and verify the cam housing part number before purchase.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Service history
Complete dealer or specialist records are essential — especially for the timing chain warranty claim. Gaps in service history void Stellantis's extended coverage.
Tires
Check tread depth, age codes, and wear patterns. Common size is 205/60 R16. Uneven front wear may indicate suspension issues.
Cold start
Start engine completely cold. Listen for timing chain rattle in the first 30 seconds — this is the single most important check.
Body and rust
Check wheel arches, underbody, and door sills. Vans used for deliveries may have hidden damage from loading.
Test drive
Minimum 20 minutes including motorway-speed driving to check DPF behaviour and gearbox operation.
Specific for this vehicle
Identify timing chain version (7mm vs 8mm)
Check the camshaft housing part number. Reference 9812647280 = older 7mm chain (higher risk). Reference 9830580480 = newer 8mm chain (much more reliable). This is the most critical check for this engine.
Verify Stellantis timing chain warranty status
Contact a Citroën dealer with the VIN. If the car has the 7mm chain and full service history, it should qualify for 10-year / 150,000-mile coverage. Confirm this before purchase.
Check AdBlue level and system warnings
Look for any AdBlue-related warning lights on the dashboard. Ask the seller about any previous AdBlue repairs or emissions faults.
Gearbox operation — prefer manual
If manual: test all gears for smooth engagement, listen for grinding. If ETG6 semi-auto: drive for 15+ minutes and watch for hesitant or jerky shifts — these are notoriously unreliable.
Test central locking thoroughly
Lock and unlock all doors multiple times with the key fob. Check that every door responds consistently. Driver's door is the most common failure point.
Bounce test front suspension
Push down firmly on each front corner. Listen for knocking or metal-on-metal contact. Check for uneven ride height indicating worn springs or shock absorbers.
Run engine for 5 minutes and check exhaust
Blue smoke indicates oil burning. Black smoke or strong diesel smell may signal DPF or injector issues. Clear exhaust is expected at operating temperature.
