Dacia Duster Hybrid 140 Mk2
2024-presentLast updated: March 2026
2024-present · 1.6 Hybrid 140 (94 hp petrol + 49 hp electric, 140 hp combined) automatic FWD
The most affordable full-hybrid SUV in Europe, combining Renault's E-Tech hybrid system with Dacia's value-for-money philosophy. Built on the CMF-B platform shared with the Jogger and Sandero, the Hybrid 140 is the only Duster variant with an automatic gearbox. Fuel economy of around 5 L/100 km in mixed driving makes it economical, though the clutchless dog-clutch transmission can feel sluggish at low speeds.
Lowest-priced hybrid SUV in Europe
Excellent fuel economy (5 L/100 km)
E-Tech gearbox seal issue documented
Early-production software glitches
Buy if: You want the cheapest automatic hybrid SUV available and can verify any open recalls have been completed.
Avoid if: You need spirited motorway performance or are uncomfortable with a first-generation hybrid system still being refined.

Known Issues most common first
Poorly manufactured O-ring leaks oil internally, risking electric motor and temperature sensor damage · more· less
The Renault E-Tech hybrid gearbox has a documented issue with an internal seal (O-ring) that can leak oil within the transmission housing. This affects the DB1 gearbox shared across the Clio, Captur, Arkana, Jogger, and Duster E-Tech models, with reportedly up to 157,000 vehicles potentially affected across the Renault/Dacia range. At best, the leaking oil triggers a temperature sensor fault and warning light. At worst, oil contamination can damage the integrated electric motor, leading to immobilization with error codes including gearbox failure risk, electric motor failure, and impossible start. Renault has acknowledged the issue and is silently replacing the faulty O-ring with an improved X-ring design during scheduled maintenance visits, rather than issuing a formal recall. If the electric motor is damaged, a full gearbox replacement can cost €3,000-3,500 at a dealer. If caught early and only the seal needs replacing, repair costs are around €800-1,200. Ensure the dealer has performed this fix at the next service.
Early-production software bugs cause camera failures, infotainment freezing, and warning lights · more· less
As a newly launched model (June 2024), the Duster Hybrid 140 has experienced various software-related teething problems. Owners report all four cameras failing and requiring recalibration, the central display freezing or the reversing camera refusing to switch off on the motorway, and Bluetooth connectivity dropping. Many of these issues have been addressed through over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and Dacia continues to push fixes. The electronic recall 0EFZ also addresses a wiring connector (R107) that may not have been properly secured at the factory, which can cause loss of traction, reduced steering assistance, and airbag malfunction. While most software issues cost nothing if resolved via OTA updates, dealer visits for persistent electrical faults can cost €100-300 for diagnosis and manual updates.
Position sensor at wrong angle prevents parking brake from engaging properly · more· less
Recall 0EWR affects Duster models produced between November 2024 and October 2024, involving approximately 181,726 vehicles worldwide (recall code 0EYA for the broader campaign). The position sensor on the parking brake actuator can be set at an incorrect angle, causing the stopping pin to not engage the P-lock position properly. This means the parking brake may not activate when pressing the P button, switching off the engine, releasing the seatbelt, or opening the driver door. The assisted parking brake (APB) function remains operational. This is a free recall repair at any Dacia dealer, but if the actuator fails outside of the recall scope, replacement costs approximately €200-600 including parts and labor.
Dog-clutch gearbox can feel jerky during low-speed transitions between electric and petrol mode · more· less
The E-Tech hybrid uses a clutchless dog-clutch gearbox derived from Formula 1 technology. A secondary electric motor synchronizes gear speeds to allow smooth shifts without a traditional clutch. However, at low speeds (particularly in stop-and-go traffic or when pulling away from junctions), the transition between electric-only and combined petrol-electric mode can feel hesitant or jerky. This is partially a design characteristic rather than a defect, and Renault has improved the behavior through software calibration updates. Some owners report harsh gear engagement when the system switches between its four engine ratios and two motor ratios. A software recalibration at the dealer typically costs €0-200 and can meaningfully improve shift quality.
Battery can drain if vehicle sits unused for extended periods, preventing hybrid system start · more· less
Like many modern hybrid vehicles, the Duster Hybrid 140 relies on its 12V auxiliary battery to initialize the hybrid system and boot all electronic modules. If the car sits unused for 2-3 weeks, the 12V battery can drain sufficiently to prevent startup. This is exacerbated by the numerous electronic systems drawing standby power (infotainment, security, and hybrid management modules). The 12V battery typically needs replacement every 3-5 years. Replacement cost is approximately €150-250 for the battery itself plus €50 for fitting, or it can be a DIY job. Keeping the car on a trickle charger during extended storage periods is recommended.
New model with known gearbox issue — verify E-Tech seal fix
The Duster Hybrid 140 is too new for comprehensive long-term reliability data, having only been on sale since June 2024. The Renault E-Tech hybrid system it uses has been in production since 2020 in other models, and the most significant concern is the documented gearbox internal seal leak that can damage the electric motor. Renault is quietly fixing this with an improved seal during service visits. Early-production software glitches are being addressed through OTA updates. The 1.6-liter naturally aspirated engine itself is well-proven and robust. Ensure the gearbox seal fix has been performed and that all recalls are completed before purchase.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete Dacia dealer records essential for verifying recall and seal-fix completion.
-
Tires
Check tread depth, age (date codes), and uneven wear. OEM size is 215/65R17.
-
Cold start
Start engine completely cold. Listen for unusual sounds from the hybrid system and watch for warning lights.
-
Test drive
Minimum 30 minutes including urban stop-and-go and motorway speeds to test all hybrid operating modes.
-
Check for E-Tech gearbox seal replacement
Ask the dealer to confirm whether the improved X-ring seal has been fitted in the hybrid gearbox. This is the most important check for any E-Tech hybrid vehicle.
-
Test low-speed hybrid transitions
Drive slowly in traffic and repeatedly pull away from standstill. Feel for excessive jerkiness or hesitation as the system switches between electric and petrol mode.
-
Verify all recalls completed (0EYA, 0EWR, 0EFZ)
Contact Dacia with the VIN to confirm the parking brake, wiring connector, and any other recalls have been addressed.
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Parking brake position sensor angle defect (0EWR, Nov 2024 production)

Parking brake actuator campaign (0EYA, March 2024 - February 2025)
Verify completed
R107 wiring connector not properly secured (0EFZ, June 2023 - July 2024)
Verify completed
Contact a Dacia dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The wiring connector recall (0EFZ) is particularly important as it affects steering assistance and airbag function.
