Known Issues most common first
8DCT electric oil pump failure (recall SC250) €0 - 3,500
Faulty solder joint in the DCT oil pump can cause complete loss of drive power · more· less
Kia recalled approximately 65,000 Sorento MQ4 models produced between October 2020 and August 2022 (campaign SC250) for a defective electric oil pump in the 8-speed wet DCT. A component on the pump's circuit board can detach due to insufficient soldering at the supplier, leading to diagnostic code P1C2D03, a check engine light, and after 20-30 seconds, complete loss of motive power as the transmission gears disengage. If the code is stored, the entire DCT assembly is replaced free of charge. If not, the TCU software is updated. This recall must be verified as completed before purchasing any 2021-2022 Sorento. Post-recall cars and later production vehicles use an improved oil pump. Outside of the recall, the 8DCT wet clutch is a relatively new unit without long-term reliability data beyond 5 years.
8DCT clutch judder at low speeds €1,500 - 3,500
Wet dual-clutch transmission shudders during creep driving, particularly at slow speeds and on inclines · more· less
Multiple owners report body vibrations when crawling at speeds up to 5 km/h, especially when turning or on inclines. The odd-gear clutch slips as the DCT meters oil flow, causing a noticeable jitter through the seat and steering wheel. Kia issued a TSB addressing clutch judder on MQ4 models, and a TCU software update can improve shift calibration. However, if the clutch packs have already worn beyond the software's ability to compensate, physical replacement is needed. A specialist clutch pack repair costs approximately 1,500-2,000 euros, while a full DCT replacement at a Kia dealer runs 2,500-3,500 euros. This issue is more pronounced in stop-and-go traffic driving. Cars used primarily for highway driving rarely exhibit this problem.
DPF clogging from short-trip driving €200 - 1,500
Diesel particulate filter blocks when the car is driven predominantly on short urban trips · more· less
The DPF requires sustained driving at motorway speeds to regenerate and burn off accumulated soot. Short urban trips prevent the exhaust reaching regeneration temperature, causing progressive clogging. The D4HE engine features more aggressive DPF regeneration logic than the older D4HB, but short trips still prevent proper operation. Symptoms include a DPF warning light, reduced power, and higher fuel consumption. A forced regeneration at a workshop costs 150-200 euros. If the filter is severely blocked, professional cleaning runs 300-500 euros. Complete DPF replacement costs 1,000-1,500 euros. Regular motorway drives of 30+ minutes at highway speeds are essential prevention.
EGR valve carbon buildup €400 - 1,000
Exhaust gas recirculation valve clogs with carbon, causing rough idle and power loss · more· less
The EGR valve on the D4HE accumulates carbon deposits, particularly with urban driving. The D4HE includes an EGR cooler which can also become affected. Symptoms include rough idle, engine management warning light, power loss, and increased emissions. This typically becomes an issue between 80,000 and 130,000 km. Cleaning the EGR valve at an independent workshop costs 200-400 euros and may provide a temporary fix. Full replacement including the cooler runs 500-1,000 euros depending on the workshop. Regular motorway driving helps prevent buildup, and a clogged EGR can accelerate DPF problems if left unaddressed.
AdBlue system sensor and dosing faults €300 - 1,500
NOx sensors or AdBlue injector malfunction, triggering countdown to engine start prevention · more· less
The SCR system uses AdBlue injection with NOx sensors upstream and downstream of the catalytic converter. Common failures include AdBlue injector crystallisation (especially in cold weather or after extended parking) and NOx sensor malfunction. If the system detects a fault, it displays a warning and initiates a countdown after which the engine will not restart. A single NOx sensor replacement costs 300-600 euros. A complete AdBlue supply module overhaul including injector, sensors, and pump can reach 1,500 euros. Using only manufacturer-approved AdBlue fluid is important. Cold climate and infrequent use accelerate crystallisation.
AWD coupling wear and vibration €600 - 2,000
AWD coupling between driveshaft and rear differential wears, causing rumbling noise on full lock · more· less
The Sorento AWD system uses an electronically controlled multi-plate coupling to distribute torque to the rear axle. Over time, the coupling plates wear and the spline connection can corrode, particularly without regular transfer case fluid changes. Symptoms include a rumbling or grinding noise when reversing on full steering lock, vibration from the drivetrain area, and eventually loss of AWD engagement. Transfer case fluid should be changed every 60,000-80,000 km as preventive maintenance. A coupling service or replacement costs 600-1,200 euros, while a full transfer case rebuild can reach 2,000 euros. This issue typically appears after 100,000-150,000 km.
Infotainment screen freezing and reboots €0 - 400
Dual 12.3-inch display can freeze, go black, or reboot during driving · more· less
The Sorento MQ4's infotainment system with its dual curved displays has been reported to freeze, go black for several minutes, or enter a reboot loop. Some owners report the system taking up to 5 minutes to become functional after starting the car. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto disconnections are also common. Most issues are resolved by software updates at the dealer, which have been released progressively since launch. In rare cases where the head unit hardware fails, replacement costs 300-400 euros. Kia has improved the software stability significantly with later updates, so verify the latest version is installed.
Capable diesel SUV with DCT and emissions system as main concern areas
The D4HE engine is an evolution of the proven 2.2 CRDi family with improved electromagnetic injectors and more aggressive emissions management. The engine itself is robust when properly maintained. The main ownership risks centre on the 8-speed wet DCT (verify the oil pump recall is completed), diesel emissions components (DPF, EGR, AdBlue), and AWD coupling wear. Cars with complete Kia dealer service history and predominantly motorway usage profiles are significantly less risky. Kia's 7-year warranty provides excellent protection if still active.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 3 more checksShow less
  • Listen for AWD coupling noise on full lock
Reverse slowly on full steering lock. A rumbling or grinding noise from the rear indicates worn AWD coupling plates or corroded splines.
  • Test infotainment system stability
Check that both displays load promptly on startup. Test Apple CarPlay or Android Auto, navigate through menus, and watch for freezes or reboots.
  • Verify transfer case fluid change records
Ask for evidence of transfer case fluid changes at 60,000-80,000 km intervals. Missing records suggest the AWD system may not have been properly maintained.
