Land Rover Defender L663
2020-presentLast updated: March 2026
2020-present · 3.0L P400 AJ20-P6 inline-6 MHEV turbo/supercharged petrol (400 hp)
The reborn Defender combines genuine off-road capability with modern luxury on the D7x aluminium monocoque platform. The P400 inline-six uses a twin-scroll turbo plus an electrically driven supercharger and 48V mild-hybrid system to produce 400 hp through a ZF 8-speed automatic. Available as 90, 110, and 130 body styles, it has quickly become one of Land Rover's best-selling models. Build quality and the P400 powertrain have proven reasonably solid, but electronic complexity, windshield durability, and air suspension (where fitted) are the main ownership concerns.

Known Issues most common first
Windshields crack spontaneously without external impact, often repeatedly on the same vehicle · more· less
This is a well-documented and widespread issue affecting 2020-2024 Defenders. Owners report windshields developing cracks without any stone impact, often originating from the edges. The steep windshield angle and large glass area create stress concentration points. Some owners have gone through three to five windshields in four years. A class-action lawsuit was filed in the US in 2024. JLR denies a design fault and has not issued a recall. Aftermarket windshield replacement costs around €550 in Europe (fitted), while OEM heated windshields with head-up display compatibility can reach €1,200. Budget for at least one replacement during ownership.
Touchscreen freezes, goes black, or reboots randomly, mainly on 2020-2021 models · more· less
The Pivi Pro infotainment system was buggy at launch, with owners reporting frozen touchscreens, random reboots, Bluetooth and Apple CarPlay disconnections, and complete black screens. One owner experienced the black screen issue seven times in the first year. Land Rover has released multiple software updates that significantly improved the system from mid-2021 onwards. The issue is mostly resolved with current software, but older cars that missed updates may still be affected. A dealer software update is typically free. In rare cases where the head unit hardware fails, replacement costs around €500. A 30-second press of the media power button with ignition off forces a reboot as a temporary fix.
48V to 12V converter fails, causing charging system fault and potential complete shutdown · more· less
The P400 uses a 48V mild-hybrid system with a Belt Integrated Starter Generator (BISG) and a DC-DC converter that charges the 12V battery. When the converter fails, the 12V battery is no longer replenished, leading to a cascade of electrical faults and eventually complete vehicle shutdown. A 2025 technical service bulletin (SSM76173) addresses visible damage to the 48V DC-DC converter connectors and harness. Replacement of the converter and harness costs €800-2,000 depending on whether warranty coverage applies. Some owners have experienced this at relatively low mileage (under 50,000 km). Preventive replacement of the 12V battery can help avoid consequential damage from low-voltage conditions.
Coolant feed and return pipes to the turbocharger develop leaks at the o-ring connections · more· less
The turbocharger coolant inlet and outlet pipes on the P400 engine can develop leaks where metal pipes connect to the turbo via o-rings and bolt connections. Forum reports indicate this commonly occurs within the first 30,000 km. Both supply and return lines are typically replaced together. Under warranty, this is a free repair. Out of warranty, parts and labor run €400-1,500 depending on how quickly the leak is caught. Left unchecked, coolant loss can lead to overheating and serious engine damage. A dealer pressure test can confirm the leak location.
Air struts leak, compressor wears, or air lines disconnect, causing one corner to sag or suspension fault warnings · more· less
Defenders equipped with electronic air suspension (X, HSE, and V8 trims) can experience air spring leaks, compressor failure, or air line disconnections. Symptoms include persistent hissing sounds, one corner sagging overnight, or suspension fault warnings on the dash. One owner reported an air hose simply popping out behind the front fender. Individual air struts cost approximately €780 each (aftermarket) to €1,200 (OEM). A new compressor runs €800-1,500 fitted. A complete air suspension overhaul (four struts plus compressor) can reach €3,500. Base model Defenders with coil springs avoid this issue entirely.
Hollow rear shock shafts bend under heavy use, causing rattling and upper mount loosening · more· less
The rear adaptive dampers use hollow shafts with an electrical wire running inside for the electronic valve. Under severe service (off-road use, heavy loads, towing), these shafts can bend and elongate, causing the upper mounting nut to loosen. This creates a rattling noise and potential suspension error codes. The issue is more common on vehicles used for their intended off-road purpose. Replacement of one rear shock costs approximately €300-750 per side depending on OEM vs aftermarket sourcing, plus labor.
The heavy side-hinged rear door sags over time, causing latching difficulty and seal gaps · more· less
The side-hinged rear door carries the full-size spare wheel on 110 and 130 variants. Over time, the weight causes the door to sag slightly, leading to difficulty latching smoothly and gaps in the door seals that allow dust and water ingress. This is a gradual wear issue rather than a sudden failure. Hinge adjustment is often a DIY fix. In more severe cases, replacement hinges or door realignment at a workshop costs €150-600. Land Rover released a service bulletin about creased door seals on rear doors contributing to wind noise, which is related to this alignment issue.
Incorrect plastic specification causes oil filter housing to crack, leading to oil leak and fire risk · more· less
A safety recall affects approximately 8,083 vehicles across multiple JLR models including the Defender, manufactured between late 2022 and 2024. The oil filter housing was made from an incorrect plastic specification that can crack over time, allowing pressurised oil to leak onto hot engine components. JLR confirmed a small number of fires occurred. The recall (N888) replaces the oil filter housing and element at no cost. If your Defender falls within this production window, verify the recall has been completed. If purchasing outside the recall window, this is not a concern.
Modern electronics are the main headache, powertrain is solid
The P400 inline-six engine and ZF 8-speed gearbox are fundamentally robust, and high-mileage examples exist without major powertrain issues. The main ownership concerns are electronic in nature: infotainment bugs, 48V MHEV system faults, and the widespread windshield cracking issue that affects most production years. Air suspension equipped models add another layer of potential expense. Cars with full dealer service history and current software updates are significantly less likely to cause problems. Overall reliability is average for the luxury off-road segment but below Toyota Land Cruiser levels.
