Mazda MX-5 NA 1.6
1989-1998Last updated: March 2026
1989-1998 · 1.6L B6-ZE (90-115 hp) DOHC 16-valve inline-4 petrol
The car that revived the lightweight roadster. The original MX-5 NA with the 1.6-litre B6-ZE engine is one of the most celebrated affordable sports cars ever built, with over 400,000 NA-generation units sold worldwide between 1989 and 1998. The engine is mechanically simple and extremely durable, parts are cheap and widely available, and the ownership community is enormous. The biggest threat to any NA is not mechanical failure but structural rust.

Known Issues most common first
Water trapped inside sills and chassis rails causes rust from the inside out, invisible until severe · more· less
This is the single biggest threat to any NA MX-5. The soft top drain tubes route water through the rear sills, and when these tubes become blocked with debris, water overflows into the sill cavities and sits there. Rust develops from the inside, so by the time paint bubbling appears on the outside, the internal structure is already compromised. The chassis rails (box girders) are similarly vulnerable because two layers of steel are spot-welded together with space for moisture to be trapped. Minor outer sill rust costs approximately €450-500 per side. If the inner sill, side shield, and wheel arch need replacement, costs reach €1,000+ per side. Severe cases requiring full structural repair can reach €3,000-4,000. Cars driven in winter on salted roads or stored outdoors are at highest risk. Always inspect with a torch from underneath and inside the boot area, and use a magnet to detect body filler.
Original vinyl tops on 25-35 year old cars are typically cracked, leaking, and past their service life · more· less
The NA's vinyl soft top degrades with UV exposure, heat cycling, and general age. On cars this old, the original top is almost certainly tired. Common symptoms include cracked vinyl along stress points, clouded or cracked plastic rear windows, failed seams, and water leaks into the cabin and boot. Water ingress accelerates rust in the sills and rear deck. A basic vinyl replacement with plastic window costs €400-700 for parts and fitting. A premium mohair top with heated glass window runs €800-1,200 fitted. DIY replacement kits start around €300-400 but require 4-6 hours of careful work. Regardless of whether you replace the top, keep the soft top drain tubes clear to prevent water pooling in the rear deck structure.
Original radiators are 25-35 years old with brittle plastic tanks and clogged passages that cause overheating · more· less
Original MX-5 NA radiators use plastic end tanks that become brittle from decades of heat cycling. The plastic turns from black to brown as it degrades, and cracks can develop suddenly, causing coolant loss. Internally, coolant passages become partially blocked with sediment and corrosion deposits, reducing cooling capacity. Symptoms include running hot in traffic, poor heater output, or visible coolant leaks. An aftermarket aluminium radiator is the preferred replacement among MX-5 owners and costs approximately €100-200 for the part, with €100-200 in labour. Always replace the thermostat (€30-50) and radiator cap (€10-20) at the same time. If the car still has its original radiator, budget for this replacement as a near-certainty.
Usually caused by a clogged radiator rather than an inherent engine weakness · more· less
The B6-ZE engine does not have a weak head gasket, but overheating caused by a clogged or failed radiator can warp the aluminium cylinder head and blow the gasket. Symptoms include white exhaust smoke with a sweet smell, milky oil, coolant loss without visible leaks, or bubbles in the coolant expansion tank. Repair involves removing the head, having it pressure tested and skimmed, fitting a new gasket, and reassembling. At an independent garage, this costs approximately €800-1,500 depending on whether the head needs machining. The engine is a non-interference design, which is a significant advantage: if the timing belt snaps, the pistons will not contact the valves. Prevention is straightforward: replace the radiator if original, change coolant every 3-4 years, and never ignore a rising temperature gauge.
Ticking noise from hydraulic valve lash adjusters on cold start, common with infrequent oil changes · more· less
The B6-ZE engine uses 16 hydraulic valve lash adjusters (HLAs) that are prone to developing a ticking noise, particularly on cold start. The noise results from the adjusters losing oil pressure overnight due to debris or worn internal check valves. If the tick disappears within 30 seconds of starting, it is generally harmless. Persistent ticking indicates worn or clogged adjusters. The first step is always an oil change with a quality engine flush product (€50-80 total). If this does not resolve the issue, the lifters can be removed and cleaned, which requires camshaft removal. Replacement HLAs cost approximately €20-30 each (€320-480 for all 16), plus €300-500 in labour. Use the correct 10W-40 or 15W-40 oil and change it every 8,000-10,000 km or annually to prevent recurrence.
Early cars have a weaker crank pulley design that can fail if the pulley bolt is not torqued correctly during timing belt service · more· less
Cars with VIN below 209447 (or 127442 for European spec) have a short nose crankshaft where the timing belt pulley doubles as a structural member supporting the accessory belt pulleys. If the crank bolt is incorrectly torqued during timing belt replacement (it must be 108-118 Nm with Loctite), the pulley can work loose, damaging the woodruff key and causing the timing to slip. Despite significant online discussion, actual failure rates are low when service is performed correctly. Most failures occur shortly after timing belt replacement by mechanics unfamiliar with the design. 1992 and later cars have the improved long nose crankshaft and are not affected. To identify: count slots in the crank pulley. Four slots indicate the short nose design, eight slots indicate the long nose. If the short nose crank fails, an engine swap from a 1992+ car costs approximately €1,500-3,000 including labour.
Headlight retractor motors stick or fail from dried grease, worn relay solder joints, or mechanical wear · more· less
The NA's iconic pop-up headlights use electric motors that commonly develop problems after decades of use. The most frequent cause is dry solder joints in the retractor relay, which can be fixed with a soldering iron for free or with a replacement relay for approximately €50. Motor failures often result from caked grease on internal spring contacts. Used replacement motors are available for €30-60, or the originals can usually be cleaned and re-greased. Worn plastic bushings and popped pivot cups are also common but inexpensive to fix. Professional repair costs €100-200 if you cannot do the work yourself, but this is one of the most DIY-friendly repairs on the car.
Differential develops a whining noise or leaks oil from aged seals, especially with neglected fluid changes · more· less
The NA 1.6 uses a smaller open differential (or optional Torsen LSD on some models) that can develop a whining noise as bearings and gear teeth wear. This is accelerated by neglected differential fluid changes, and many used MX-5s have never had the fluid changed in over 100,000 km. The three oil seals (pinion and two axle shaft seals) can also leak with age. Seal replacement costs €150-250 at an independent garage. If the differential gears themselves are worn and whining, a replacement used differential costs €200-400 plus €100-200 for fitting. The 1.6 differentials are known to be slightly weaker than the 1.8 units. Always change the differential fluid (€20-40) when purchasing a used car, and check for driveshaft play.
Mechanically robust, but rust is the real enemy
The 1.6 B6-ZE engine is exceptionally reliable and many examples exceed 200,000 km without major engine work. The gearbox is strong, parts are cheap, and the community is vast. However, structural rust in the sills and chassis rails is a serious and expensive problem on most surviving cars. A rust-free NA with maintenance history is worth significantly more than a mechanically perfect car with compromised sills. Budget for soft top and radiator replacement as near-certainties on any car this age.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete maintenance records are essential, particularly documentation of timing belt replacements and regular oil changes.
-
Tires
Check tread depth, age (date codes on sidewall), and uneven wear patterns. Original size is 185/60R14.
-
Cold start
Must start the engine completely cold. Listen for hydraulic tappet tick in the first 30 seconds. Some tick is normal but persistent loud ticking indicates worn lifters.
-
Test drive
Minimum 20 minutes including varied speeds. Check for smooth gearbox operation, no pulling under braking, and no unusual noises from the drivetrain.
-
Inspect rear sills and chassis rails for rust
Use a torch to examine the underside and inside of the rear sills. Look for paint bubbling, rust perforation, and body filler (test with a magnet). This is the most critical check on any NA MX-5.
-
Verify soft top drain tubes are clear
Pour water into the soft top storage area and verify it exits cleanly through the drain tubes at the rear sills. Blocked drains cause expensive internal rust damage.
-
Check radiator condition
Examine the plastic end tanks of the radiator. If the plastic has turned from black to brown, the radiator is brittle and needs replacement. Check for coolant stains or white residue around tanks.
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Fuel filler non-return valve sticking (various production years)
Check with VIN
Takata airbag inflator (1995-1998 models with airbags)
