Mercedes-Benz C200 CDI W204
2007-2014Last updated: March 2026
2007-2014 · 2.1L OM646/OM651 diesel (136 hp)
The W204 C200 CDI is the entry-level diesel in Mercedes' compact executive lineup, offering good fuel economy and a comfortable ride. Two engine generations were fitted: the older OM646 (2007-2009) is simpler and more reliable, while the OM651 (2009-2014) is more refined but brings timing chain and injector concerns. Both share common W204 platform issues like the electronic steering lock and rear subframe corrosion.
Good fuel economy (5-6 L/100 km)
Strong parts availability
OM651 timing chain at rear of engine
ESL failure immobilises the car
Buy if: You want an affordable premium diesel with complete service history and can verify recalls and subframe condition.
Avoid if: You mostly do short city trips (DPF clogging) or want trouble-free ownership without monitoring the timing chain.

Known Issues most common first
Single-row chain stretches, tensioner loses pressure causing cold start rattle · more· less
The OM651 engine (2009-2014 C200 CDI) uses a simplex single-row timing chain located at the rear of the engine. The tensioner can lose oil pressure overnight, allowing chain slack and a distinctive rattle on cold start lasting 1-30 seconds. This typically occurs between 100,000-180,000 km. If ignored, the chain can skip teeth and cause catastrophic valve damage. Some specialists can replace the chain without removing the engine for around 1,500 euros, but many shops quote 2,500-3,500 euros because they pull the engine. Mercedes released updated tensioner parts. The earlier OM646 engine (2007-2009) uses a different design and is significantly less prone to this issue.
Worn motor brushes prevent steering unlock, immobilising the car · more· less
The ESL uses a small worm drive motor with carbon brushes that wear out after 8-10 years regardless of mileage. When it fails, the steering wheel stays locked and the car will not start. Early signs include needing multiple key insertions before the steering unlocks, or clicking noises from the steering column. Mercedes dealers charge 800-1,500 euros for a full unit replacement. Specialists offer motor repair for 300-500 euros, or an ESL emulator bypass for 250-400 euros which permanently disables the steering lock security feature. Most affected: 2007-2010 model years.
Diesel particulate filter clogs when the engine cannot reach regeneration temperature · more· less
The DPF needs sustained driving at motorway speeds for passive regeneration to burn off accumulated soot. Cars used primarily for short urban trips or stop-and-go traffic prevent the engine from reaching the necessary temperature. Symptoms include reduced power, DPF warning light, and increased fuel consumption. A forced regeneration at a garage costs 100-200 euros. Professional DPF cleaning runs 300-500 euros. A full replacement costs 800-1,800 euros. With regular motorway use, the DPF can last well beyond 150,000 km. A failed thermostat (common on W204) can also prevent regeneration by keeping engine temperatures too low.
Defective Delphi piezo injectors cause rough idle, misfires, and limp mode · more· less
Early OM651 engines (2009-2012) used Delphi piezo injectors with a high failure rate due to an unauthorized design change by the supplier. Mercedes replaced these under a service campaign rather than formal recall. How to identify: piezo injectors have no fuel return lines visible on top, while the later solenoid injectors (from mid-2012 onwards) do have return lines. If buying a pre-2012 car, verify the injectors were replaced. If replacement is needed now, expect 200-400 euros per injector plus labour. Each injector requires ECU coding after installation. Total cost for all four: 1,200-2,400 euros at an independent specialist.
Subframe rusts from inside out, often invisible during standard inspections · more· less
The rear subframe can corrode from the inside due to water and salt ingress, with perforation forming on the upper surface that is difficult to see from below. This is a known issue on pre-2013 W204 models, documented in a class action lawsuit and acknowledged by Mercedes with an extended warranty in some markets (up to 20 years unlimited mileage in the US). In Europe, coverage varies by dealer. Cars in salt-heavy regions (northern Europe, mountain areas) are most at risk. A severely corroded subframe is a safety hazard and will fail roadworthiness inspection. Replacement costs 800-2,500 euros depending on the specialist.
Undersized ground wire overheats, causing bulb warnings and potential fire risk · more· less
The brown ground wire in the rear light cluster is too thin for the electrical load. It overheats over time, causing burnt connectors, intermittent bulb failure warnings on the dashboard, and in severe cases smoke or small flames from the connector. A recall was issued for 2007-2011 models. DIY fix involves installing a thicker bypass earth wire for 20-50 euros in parts. Professional repair with new bulb board and connector costs 100-350 euros per side. Mercedes updated the bulb carrier design several times. Check both sides regardless of symptoms.
Carbon deposits restrict the EGR valve, causing power loss and warning lights · more· less
The EGR valve and its passages accumulate carbon deposits over time, especially with city driving. Symptoms include check engine light, ESP warning, loss of power, and increased fuel consumption. The valve can fail either open or closed, both causing driveability issues. Cleaning sometimes provides a temporary fix, but replacement is often required. The EGR valve part costs 150-300 euros, with labour adding 200-400 euros. On the OM651, the EGR cooler can also develop internal leaks, allowing coolant into the intake tract. EGR cooler replacement is more involved at 1,200-1,800 euros due to 8-10 hours of labour.
Internal spring breaks, causing the door to not lock or unlock with the remote · more· less
The door lock actuators contain a small spring that eventually fatigues and breaks. When this happens, the affected door will not respond to the remote or interior switches and may bounce between locked and unlocked states. The driver's door fails most frequently due to higher use. Mercedes dealers charge 600 euros or more per door. Independent garages charge 200-350 euros. The actuator module costs around 150-200 euros for genuine parts. The actual spring costs only a few euros but requires disassembling the actuator to replace.
Reliable for a premium diesel, but requires monitoring
The W204 C200 CDI is a significant quality improvement over the W203 predecessor. The earlier OM646 engine (2007-2009) is simpler and considered more robust, while the OM651 (2009-2014) is more refined but needs its timing chain monitored. Platform issues like the ESL, rear lights, and subframe corrosion affect all W204 models regardless of engine. With proper maintenance and regular motorway driving, high-mileage examples beyond 200,000 km exist.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete Mercedes dealer or specialist records essential. Verify oil change intervals (maximum 15,000 km or 12 months).
-
Tires
Check tread depth, age (date codes on sidewall), and uneven wear patterns. Standard size is 205/55 R16 or 225/45 R17.
-
Cold start
Engine must be completely cold. Listen for any rattling sounds in the first 30 seconds.
-
Test drive
Minimum 30 minutes including motorway speeds to reach full operating temperature and allow DPF status check.
-
Cold start timing chain rattle (OM651 cars)
Start engine completely cold and listen carefully during the first 30 seconds. Any metallic rattling indicates timing chain tensioner wear. This is the single most important check on 2009-2014 models.
-
Check ESL operation
Insert key and note if the steering unlocks immediately and smoothly. Multiple attempts or clicking sounds indicate the ESL motor is wearing out. Test this several times.
-
Inspect rear subframe from above and below
Use a mirror or camera to check the upper surface of the rear subframe for rust perforation. This is often missed on standard inspections as the corrosion starts from inside.
