Opel Astra L 1.2 Turbo 2022-present Same platform, petrol engine. Avoids diesel-specific DPF/EGR/AdBlue issues but has its own timing belt-in-oil concerns on the 1.2 PureTech engine. Volkswagen Golf Mk8 2.0 TDI 2020-present Direct competitor with the proven EA288evo engine. Generally more reliable diesel drivetrain, but infotainment and electronics have their own issues. Ford Focus Mk4 1.5 EcoBlue 2018-2024 Similar segment and power output. Ford's EcoBlue diesel has fewer headline recalls but reported injector and DPF sensor issues. Opel Astra K 1.4 Turbo 2015-2021 Previous generation on the GM platform. Different engine family entirely. More proven but lacks the Astra L's modern tech and efficiency. Peugeot 3008 Mk2 1.5 BlueHDI 2017-2023 Same 1.5 BlueHDI engine with identical timing chain concerns. Heavier SUV body puts more strain on the drivetrain.
Known Issues most common first
Camshaft timing chain premature wear €1,200 - 4,500
7mm camshaft chain stretches and can snap, especially on engines built before January 2023 · more· less
This is the most serious known issue with the 1.5 BlueHDI engine. The original 7mm camshaft chain (linking the crankshaft to the camshaft) can stretch prematurely, causing cold-start rattling, timing errors (P0011/P0012 codes), and in worst cases complete chain failure leading to catastrophic engine damage. The problem affects engines produced between October 2017 and January 2023. Stellantis has recalled over 600,000 vehicles across Europe and now covers repairs at 100% for 10 years or 240,000 km, provided the car has been serviced according to manufacturer guidelines. From 2023, a revised 8mm chain is fitted at the factory. If your car has the older 7mm chain, verify the recall inspection has been completed and ask for the chain condition assessment results. Using the recommended 5W-30 oil (instead of the original 0W-30 specification) is now advised for all pre-2023 engines.
DPF clogging from short-trip driving €400 - 1,500
Diesel particulate filter clogs when the car is driven mainly on short urban trips · more· less
Like all modern diesels, the DPF requires periodic regeneration at sustained highway speeds. The 1.5 BlueHDI is particularly sensitive to short-trip driving because the exhaust temperatures often do not reach the threshold for passive regeneration. Symptoms include the DPF warning light, loss of power, and eventually limp mode. A chemical DPF cleaning costs around €200-400, while a full replacement runs €900-1,500 including labor. The filter typically lasts 150,000-200,000 km under normal conditions, but can clog as early as 60,000 km if the car is used predominantly for city driving. Regular highway runs of at least 20 minutes per week significantly reduce the risk.
AdBlue system faults €200 - 1,200
AdBlue pump, injector, or sensor failures can prevent engine restart · more· less
The selective catalytic reduction (SCR) system uses AdBlue to reduce NOx emissions. The AdBlue injector and pump are known weak points, particularly in cold weather when the fluid can crystallize in the lines. Symptoms range from a warning message to the engine refusing to restart after being switched off. A sensor replacement or software reset costs €200-400. If the AdBlue pump or catalytic converter needs replacing, the bill can reach €800-1,200. This issue is not unique to the Astra but is a common Stellantis diesel trait. Keeping the AdBlue tank at least half full and avoiding extended periods of non-use in freezing conditions helps.
EGR valve carbon buildup €300 - 800
Exhaust gas recirculation valve clogs with carbon, especially with short-trip use · more· less
The EGR valve recirculates exhaust gases to reduce emissions but accumulates carbon deposits over time. Short urban trips accelerate this process. Symptoms include rough idling, loss of torque, increased fuel consumption, and the check engine light. Professional cleaning costs €150-300 and is recommended every 50,000 km as preventive maintenance. A full EGR valve replacement costs €400-800 including labor. Regular spirited driving helps burn off deposits and extends the valve's life.
EAT8 automatic gearbox shifting issues (if equipped) €300 - 2,000
Jerky low-speed shifts and delayed gear changes on the 8-speed automatic · more· less
If your Astra L has the EAT8 8-speed automatic (built by Aisin), some owners report jerky shifts at low speeds, delayed gear engagement, and the transmission downshifting too early at higher speeds. These symptoms typically appear between 50,000 and 100,000 km. A software update to the transmission control unit often resolves shift smoothness issues and costs €100-300 at an Opel dealer. In more severe cases, valve body repair or mechatronics replacement can cost €1,000-2,000. Keeping the transmission fluid fresh (change every 60,000 km despite any claims of lifetime fill) is strongly recommended. Manual gearbox versions do not have this issue.
Infotainment system software glitches €0 - 400
Touchscreen freezes, black screens, and connectivity dropouts · more· less
The Astra L's infotainment system is prone to occasional software crashes, screen freezing, and Bluetooth connectivity issues. These typically appear within the first 10,000-30,000 km. In most cases, a system restart or software update resolves the problem at no cost. Opel has released several over-the-air and dealer-applied software patches. In rare cases, the infotainment module needs hardware replacement (€300-400 if outside warranty). While annoying, this is a cosmetic rather than mechanical issue and does not affect driving safety.
Timing chain recall dominates, but covered by Stellantis extended warranty
The Astra L 1.5 Diesel is a competent modern compact, but the timing chain issue on pre-2023 engines is a genuine concern that led to one of Stellantis's largest recalls. The good news: repairs are fully covered for 10 years or 240,000 km. Beyond the chain, the diesel drivetrain requires consistent motorway use to keep DPF, EGR, and AdBlue systems healthy. If serviced properly and driven regularly on longer trips, most issues can be prevented or caught early.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 4 more checksShow less
  • DPF regeneration history
Ask the seller about driving patterns. A car used primarily for short city trips may have a partially clogged DPF. A diagnostic scan can show DPF soot loading and regeneration count.
  • Test AdBlue system
Check the AdBlue level and verify no SCR warnings appear. Start and stop the engine twice during your inspection to confirm it restarts without AdBlue errors.
  • EAT8 gearbox feel (automatic only)
During test drive, pay attention to low-speed shifts (1st to 2nd gear). Jerky or hesitant shifts may indicate need for a software update or fluid change.
  • Check for exhaust smell in cabin
With ventilation on, check for diesel exhaust odor inside the cabin. This may indicate an exhaust leak near the manifold or turbo area.
