Renault Clio E-Tech Hybrid Mk5

2020-2025Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2020-2025 · 1.6 H4M + two electric motors (140-145 hp combined) full hybrid automatic

The Clio E-Tech full hybrid is the smallest car in the Renault range to use the E-Tech powertrain, combining a 1.6-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with two electric motors and a clutchless four-speed dog-tooth gearbox inspired by Formula 1. It can drive short distances on electric power alone and delivers real-world economy of around 4.5-5.5 l/100 km. The hybrid system is complex but generally dependable, though a significant gearbox seal recall affects cars built before late 2022.

Excellent urban fuel economy No conventional clutch or belt to wear
Gearbox seal recall (pre-Sept 2022) Software and electrical glitches common
Buy if: You want a fuel-efficient supermini with automatic transmission and can verify the gearbox O-ring recall has been completed on pre-2022 cars.
Avoid if: You need strong motorway acceleration (the hybrid system is sluggish under hard load) or prefer a powertrain that any independent garage can service.

Common Problems
Innovative hybrid system with known gearbox recall and software teething issues
The Clio E-Tech full hybrid has a more complex powertrain than conventional Clios, combining a 1.6 petrol engine with two electric motors and a clutchless gearbox. The most significant concern is the gearbox O-ring seal recall affecting cars built before October 2022 — always verify this has been completed. Software-related warning lights are common but usually benign. The 1.6 H4M engine is robust for this application since it runs less intensively than in a conventional car. Long-term data remains limited as the E-Tech system has only been in production since 2020, but early indications suggest it is reasonably reliable when properly serviced and the gearbox recall is addressed.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Gearbox lubrication circuit O-ring seal (April 2019 - September 2022 production, ~155,825 vehicles across E-Tech models) Critical - verify completed
Steering column motor control internal failure (June - October 2019 production, 72 vehicles) Verify completed
Engine calibration software update to prevent false 'Electrical Failure Danger' warnings (2020-2023 production) Verify completed
Contact a Renault dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The gearbox O-ring recall is particularly critical for pre-October 2022 cars — if this seal has not been replaced, the electric motor may be at risk of oil contamination and failure.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, unlimited km) Expired on 2020-2023 models; may still apply on late 2024
Hybrid battery warranty (8 years / 160,000 km) Covers traction battery below 63% capacity
Corrosion perforation warranty (12 years) Covers bodywork perforation from manufacturing defects
Extended warranty Available through Renault dealers, up to 3 additional years
Renault's standard EU warranty is 2 years with no mileage limit. Some markets offered extended 3-year or 5-year warranty packages from new. The hybrid traction battery is covered for 8 years or 160,000 km. Always verify remaining warranty coverage with Renault using the VIN, as coverage varies by market and purchase date.

Renault Clio IV 0.9 TCe Mk4 2012-2019 Previous generation with simpler turbocharged engine. Timing chain tensioner and thermostat housing are the main concerns. No hybrid complexity. Toyota Yaris 1.5 Hybrid XP130 2012-2020 Significantly more reliable hybrid system with decades of Toyota refinement. Only around 10% of owners report any faults. Much lower ownership risk. Honda Jazz Hybrid GR 2020-present Exceptionally reliable hybrid drivetrain. Different segment (taller, more practical) but similar philosophy. Very few reported issues beyond minor software glitches. Renault Captur E-Tech Hybrid Mk2 2020-present Same E-Tech powertrain, same gearbox seal recall, same issues. Slightly higher running costs due to larger tires and heavier weight. Peugeot 208 1.2 PureTech A9 2012-2019 Wet timing belt degradation is a serious concern on the PureTech. Different weak points but arguably higher risk on pre-2019 models.
