BMW 320d F30 2012-2018 Same engine, lower tune (184 hp). Identical reliability issues but less turbo stress. Slightly cheaper to buy and maintain. Audi A4 B8 2.0 TDI 2008-2015 Main competitor with EA189/EA288 diesel. Oil consumption and timing chain tensioner issues, but no rear-mounted chain design. Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204 2007-2014 OM651 diesel is generally robust. Injector seal leaks and rust on subframe are the main concerns. Lower running costs overall. BMW 330d F30 2012-2018 Inline-six N57 diesel. More power and smoother, but higher fixed costs. The six-cylinder avoids the N47 timing chain issue. BMW 320d E90 2005-2011 Previous generation with earlier N47 revision. Worse timing chain failure rates on 2007-2009 builds. Cheaper to buy but higher risk.
Known Issues most common first
Timing chain tensioner wear (N47 engine, pre-2015) €1,200 - 2,500
Rear-mounted chain stretches, tensioner loses pressure causing cold start rattle · more· less
The N47D20D engine (2013-2015 325d) has the timing chain at the rear of the engine, between the block and the gearbox. The tensioner release valve weakens over time, allowing oil pressure to bleed off overnight. This causes a distinctive metallic rattle for 1-30 seconds on cold start. Typically occurs between 60,000-120,000 km. BMW progressively revised the chain and tensioner through 2013-2015, and late-production N47 units are significantly less prone than 2007-2011 versions. However, the risk remains. Replacement requires engine removal, costing €1,200-1,800 at a specialist or €1,800-2,500 at a BMW dealer. If ignored, the chain can skip or snap, destroying the engine. The 2015+ B47 engine largely resolved this with a front-mounted chain. Always verify service history for chain replacement on pre-2015 cars.
EGR cooler internal leak €400 - 800
EGR cooler leaks coolant internally, risk of intake damage and fire in severe cases · more· less
BMW issued a major recall (2018, expanded 2021) affecting over 1.6 million diesel vehicles including the F30 325d with N47 engine. The EGR cooler can develop internal coolant leaks. When coolant mixes with diesel soot, it creates hard deposits that can damage the intake manifold, and in rare cases increase fire risk. BMW has acknowledged that the initial 2018 recall fix was inadequate, leading to a revised repair in 2021. Symptoms include rough running at low rpm, coolant loss without visible external leak, and white exhaust smoke. EGR valve replacement costs €400-600 at an independent shop. A full EGR cooler and valve replacement runs €600-800. Always verify this recall has been completed with the latest repair before purchase.
Electric steering rack failure €50 - 2,000
Factory pre-grease dries out causing knock, or electric motor fails causing loss of power assist · more· less
Two types of failure affect the F30 electric steering rack. The first is a knocking noise when turning the steering wheel with the engine off, caused by factory grease drying out. BMW offers a repair kit (part 32106891974, approximately €40-60) that fixes this acoustic issue. The second, more serious failure involves the electric motor control unit failing, causing a 'power steering assist malfunction' warning and partial or total loss of power steering. This can occur as early as 49,000 km. Full steering rack replacement costs €1,500-2,000 fitted. Cars produced before January 2013 may also experience steering vibration between 60-130 km/h requiring a new EPS unit.
DPF clogging on short-trip usage €150 - 2,500
Diesel particulate filter clogs when car is used mainly for short urban journeys · more· less
The DPF needs regular highway runs at sustained speed to regenerate by burning off accumulated soot. Cars driven mainly in urban traffic or for trips under 20 minutes prevent the system from completing regeneration cycles. BMW's system automatically raises exhaust temperature to clear the DPF, but this requires at least 20-30 minutes of driving above 60 km/h with a minimum of 10 litres of fuel. Symptoms include loss of power, increased fuel consumption, and a dashboard warning. Professional DPF cleaning costs €150-200. Full DPF replacement costs €800-2,500 depending on whether aftermarket or OEM parts are used. Prevention: drive at 2,000+ rpm for 20-30 minutes regularly.
Swirl flap carbon buildup / failure €50 - 1,500
Intake manifold swirl flaps clog with carbon or their actuator linkage wears, causing limp mode · more· less
The swirl flaps in the intake manifold are designed to optimise airflow at low engine speeds. Over time, they become coated with carbon deposits from the EGR system and crankcase breather. The carbon buildup restricts their movement, and in some cases the actuator linkage wears and moves beyond its intended range, triggering limp mode. If a flap breaks apart, debris can enter the combustion chamber and cause serious engine damage. Preventive swirl flap removal or blanking costs €50-150 and eliminates the risk entirely with no noticeable performance change. If engine damage has occurred from ingested debris, repair costs can reach €1,500+. Many high-mileage owners proactively remove the flaps.
Turbo actuator sticking / turbo failure €500 - 2,500
Wastegate actuator sticks from soot buildup, causing loss of boost and limp mode · more· less
The turbocharger wastegate actuator can stick due to soot and carbon buildup, particularly on cars driven gently or only for short trips. The 325d runs higher boost than the 320d from the same engine, which can accelerate wear on turbo components. Symptoms include EPC warning light, intermittent power loss, and limp mode. The actuator alone can be repaired at a specialist for €500-700. If the turbo internals are damaged (worn bearings, oil starvation), a full turbo replacement costs €1,200-2,500. Prevention: use quality oil, change it every 10,000 km rather than relying on BMW's longer service intervals, and allow the turbo to cool before switching off after spirited driving.
Oil filter housing gasket leak €300 - 600
Gasket between oil filter housing and engine degrades, causing external oil leak · more· less
The gasket between the oil filter housing and the engine block degrades with heat cycling over time, losing elasticity and causing an oil leak. This is one of the most common oil leak locations on all BMW four-cylinder engines. The leak is usually visible as oil stains or drips around the oil filter area. If left unattended, oil can drip onto hot exhaust components. Parts cost €30-80 (gasket and O-rings), but labour is 2-3 hours due to accessibility. Total repair: €300-450 at an independent shop, €450-600 at a BMW dealer.
Reliable when maintained, but timing chain needs attention on pre-2015 cars
The 325d shares its engine with the more common 320d, meaning issues are well-documented and parts are widely available. The most significant concern is the N47 timing chain on pre-2015 models. Post-2015 B47 engines are substantially more reliable. EGR recall status should always be verified. With regular servicing at correct intervals and occasional longer drives, the 325d can deliver dependable high-mileage ownership.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 3 more checksShow less
  • Inspect for oil leaks around filter housing
Look underneath the car and around the oil filter housing area for oil stains or fresh seepage.
  • Check coolant level and condition
Low coolant without visible external leak may indicate an internal EGR cooler leak. Check for milky oil or white exhaust smoke.
  • DPF condition and driving history
Ask about driving patterns. Cars used mainly for short urban trips are at high risk of DPF problems. Check for any warning lights related to exhaust.
