BMW Reliability & Costs

Built on rear-wheel drive, inline sixes, and the promise of driving pleasure since the 2002 defined the sport sedan in 1968. The gap between a great BMW and a terrible one is wider than any other brand — pick the right engine and you get the driving experience without the drama.

Best BMW For...

Cheapest to maintain
BMW 118i F40 2019-present
€600-1,100/yr
The newest 1 Series generation with the B38/B48 engine has the lowest maintenance costs in the entire BMW lineup. Simple front-wheel-drive platform with fewer components to fail.
Best value
BMW 320d F30 2012-2019
€850-1,550/yr
Available cheaply on the used market with abundant parts supply. The later F30 models received the more reliable B47 diesel engine, offering strong fuel economy with moderate maintenance costs.
Most reliable
BMW 320d G20 2019-present
€850-1,600/yr
The G20 3 Series with the refined B47 diesel is BMW's reliability benchmark. Top J.D. Power scores, strong TÜV pass rates, and a proven engine family make it the safest BMW choice.
Enthusiast pick
BMW M140i B58 2011-2019
€1,100-2,100/yr
The legendary B58 inline-six in a compact, rear-wheel-drive package. One of BMW's most reliable performance engines with genuine sports car driving dynamics at reasonable running costs.
Best for families
BMW X1 sDrive18i U11 2022-present
€700-1,200/yr
The latest X1 combines a practical raised driving position with BMW's most affordable running costs. B38 three-cylinder is proven reliable, and the U11 platform scores well in ADAC breakdown statistics.
Best first BMW
BMW 116i F20 2011-2019
€800-1,650/yr
Cheap to buy, easy to insure, and genuinely fun to drive with rear-wheel drive. Avoid early N13 engines (2011-2014) — look for the 2015+ facelift with the B38 engine.
Best long-distance
BMW 520d G30 2017-present
€900-1,800/yr
The G30 5 Series with the B47 diesel is BMW's long-distance sweet spot. Quiet, comfortable, 5+ l/100km on the motorway, and far more reliable than its F10 predecessor.
Best to avoid
BMW 520d F10 2010-2017
€1,300-2,200/yr
The F10 520d with the N47 diesel combines a notorious timing chain problem with high maintenance costs for its segment. Complex electronics age poorly. A G30 520d costs less to maintain despite being newer.

Common Issues

EGR / Exhaust gas recirculation

EGR valves clog with carbon deposits, especially on diesel models driven predominantly in city traffic. Symptoms include rough idling, reduced power, and increased emissions. The N47 and M47 diesel engines are particularly affected. Replacement costs range from €400 to €900.

Turbocharger failure

Turbocharger wastegate rattle and eventual failure affect both petrol and diesel turbo BMWs. Diesel models with the M47 and N47 engines are most vulnerable, with oil starvation and carbon buildup accelerating wear. Replacement is expensive at €1,200–€2,500 including labour.

Timing chain wear

The N47 diesel engine is notorious for rear-mounted timing chain failures that can cause catastrophic engine damage. The N20 petrol engine also suffered from plastic chain guide degradation on pre-2015 units, leading to a US class-action settlement. BMW extended warranty coverage on affected B47 engines to 10 years. A rattling noise on cold start is the earliest warning sign.

DPF / Diesel particulate filter

Diesel particulate filters clog on BMWs used primarily for short trips where the engine never reaches regeneration temperature. Symptoms include a DPF warning light, reduced power, and limp mode. Replacement costs €1,000–€2,000, though forced regeneration at a dealer can sometimes resolve early-stage blockage.

Gearbox / Transmission issues

The ZF 8-speed automatic (8HP) fitted to most modern BMWs is generally reliable but can develop mechatronic unit faults and harsh shifting if transmission fluid is not replaced at recommended intervals. Older models with the GM 6-speed automatic can suffer from torque converter shudder. Manual gearboxes are largely trouble-free.
