2014-2017 · 1.6 DIG-T MR16DDT (163 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged petrol

The top-spec petrol option in the first-generation J11 Qashqai lineup. The 1.6 DIG-T MR16DDT offers 163 hp, which gives noticeably stronger performance than the smaller 1.2 DIG-T, and crucially avoids that engine's well-documented piston ring and oil consumption defects. Available with a six-speed manual or Xtronic CVT, it was offered from 2014 until it was phased out around 2017 in favour of diesel options before the J12 arrived in 2021.

More reliable than the 1.2 DIG-T Strong 163 hp for a compact SUV
CVT gearbox can be expensive Turbo oil feed pipes coke up
Buy if: You want a petrol Qashqai J11 with decent performance and can find a manual gearbox version with full service history.
Avoid if: You need a CVT automatic (gearbox replacement is very expensive) or primarily drive short trips (turbo and carbon buildup risks).

Common Problems
More reliable than the 1.2 DIG-T, but turbo and CVT need attention
The 1.6 DIG-T MR16DDT avoids the serious piston ring and oil consumption issues that plague the smaller 1.2 DIG-T engine. It is fundamentally a more robust unit, capable of exceeding 200,000 km with proper maintenance. The main concerns are turbocharger longevity (keep oil feed pipes clean, let the engine idle briefly after hard driving) and the CVT gearbox on automatic models. Manual gearbox versions are significantly lower risk. Battery drain is common but inexpensive to resolve.

Turn signal indicator malfunction at side mirrors (2017 models, KBA 7410) Verify completed
Contact a Nissan dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The OBD non-compliance recall specifically affects the 1.6 DIG-T engine variant and should be confirmed for cars produced between April 2014 and May 2016.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years / 100,000 km) Expired on all 1.6 DIG-T models
Rust perforation warranty (6 years) Expired on pre-2020 models
Extended warranty Available through Nissan dealers and third-party providers
All Qashqai J11 1.6 DIG-T models (produced 2014-2017) are well outside their original 3-year / 100,000 km factory warranty. Extended warranty coverage is available from Nissan dealers and independent warranty providers, which may be worth considering given the potential cost of CVT gearbox replacement.

↔ Also consider

Nissan Qashqai 1.2 DIG-T J11 2014-2018 Smaller engine with well-documented piston ring defect causing excessive oil consumption. Timing chain stretch is also more common. The 1.6 DIG-T avoids these issues. Hyundai Tucson 1.6 GDi TL 2015-2020 Simpler naturally aspirated engine with fewer failure modes. Has ABS module fire risk recall. Longer 5-year warranty is a significant advantage. Ford Kuga 1.5 EcoBoost Mk2 2014-2019 Similar performance but pre-2018 engines had a serious coolant intrusion issue. Manual clutch pressure plate is another known weak point. Nissan Qashqai 1.3 DIG-T J12 2021-present Successor generation with a more modern 1.3 engine co-developed with Renault. Eliminates the oil consumption and piston ring issues but has its own thermostat and CVT concerns. Mazda CX-5 2.0 SkyActiv-G KE 2012-2017 Naturally aspirated so no turbo risks, but GDI carbon buildup still applies. Generally more reliable with fewer reported issues overall.
