Opel Corsa-e Electric
2020-presentLast updated: March 2026
2020-present · 50 kWh battery, 136 hp (100 kW) electric motor, front-wheel drive
Stellantis' electric city car, built on the shared CMP platform with the Peugeot e-208 and DS 3 E-Tense. Offers genuine everyday usability with 330 km WLTP range, 100 kW DC fast charging, and low running costs. The electric drivetrain is mechanically simple and has proven mostly reliable, though the Mahle onboard charger fitted to some models has become a documented weak point across all Stellantis EVs on this platform.
Very low routine maintenance
Decent fast charging (100 kW DC)
Mahle OBC failure risk
Poor winter range performance
Buy if: You want an affordable electric city car with low running costs and can verify the onboard charger is working correctly before purchase.
Avoid if: You rely on long motorway trips in cold weather or cannot accept the risk of an expensive onboard charger replacement.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
Known Issues most common first
Mahle 11 kW AC charger fails, preventing all AC charging from home or public stations · more· less
The most significant known issue across all Stellantis eCMP electric vehicles. The Mahle-manufactured 11 kW onboard charger can fail completely, preventing any AC (Type 2) charging — the car can only DC fast charge until repaired. The OBC costs approximately €2,200-3,800 for replacement, and the unit must be dealer-coded to the vehicle (salvage parts cannot be used). Stellantis extended OBC warranty to 4 years from April 2021, and some owners have received goodwill coverage outside this period. Newer production cars use a VMAX-manufactured charger that appears more reliable. When buying used, always test AC charging before purchase. Cars built 2019-2022 with the original Mahle unit are most at risk.
Warning message can immobilize the car, caused by various sensor or component issues · more· less
A generic warning that can be triggered by multiple root causes including faulty wheel speed sensors (€200-300 to replace), AC compressor stator wiring faults, a failed HV battery heater, or BSI software bugs. In many cases a software update resolves the issue at no cost. In more serious cases, component replacement is needed. The AC compressor issue was addressed by a recall (KGS/221078CO) for cars built October 2019 to November 2022 — a software update prevents the compressor failure from shutting down the entire powertrain. Verify this recall has been completed on any pre-2023 car.
12V AGM battery drains if car sits unused for several days, especially with connected apps polling · more· less
The Corsa-e draws a small parasitic current even when off, and smartphone apps (MyOpel/MyVauxhall) polling the car can accelerate drain. Some owners report the 12V battery dying within 3-5 days of inactivity. The 12V battery is an AGM type costing €150-250 for the part plus €50-100 for dealer fitting and coding. Using a trickle charger or driving regularly prevents the issue. Expect to replace the 12V battery every 3-4 years on average, which is faster than typical ICE cars due to the constant electronic load.
Car occasionally refuses to start AC charging, often related to charger communication issues · more· less
Some owners report the car intermittently failing to initiate AC charging with certain home chargers or wallboxes. The car may display 'Charge Delayed' or simply not begin charging. This is often caused by communication incompatibility between the car and specific charger brands, power line interference from solar inverters, or a precursor to full OBC failure. In most cases, unplugging and reconnecting resolves it. If persistent, check if the OBC is beginning to fail. Some home chargers need to be set to a compatibility mode to work with Stellantis EVs.
Touchscreen locks up, goes black, or becomes unresponsive, especially in cold or damp conditions · more· less
The infotainment system can freeze, go completely black, or become unresponsive to touch input. Damp weather and cold temperatures seem to increase the frequency. A forced reboot (holding the power button and phone icon simultaneously for 6 seconds) usually resolves it. In rare cases, the infotainment module itself needs replacement (€200-300 at an independent specialist). This is more of an annoyance than a safety issue, as driving functions are unaffected.
Dashboard, door panels, and trim pieces develop rattles that are more noticeable in the quiet EV cabin · more· less
Because the electric drivetrain is nearly silent, interior rattles and creaks become much more noticeable than in an ICE car. Common sources include dashboard components, door panels, and the rear-view mirror area. Some owners report it worsens over time. The issue is more about build quality tolerance than a defect. Dealers can sometimes address individual rattles under warranty, but it tends to be an ongoing nuisance rather than a fixable problem.
Simple drivetrain, but the onboard charger is the weak link
The Corsa-e's electric motor and battery have proven reliable, with no widespread reports of drive motor or battery pack failures. The main financial risk is the Mahle onboard charger, which can cost over €2,000 to replace if it fails outside the extended warranty period. Always test AC charging thoroughly before purchase, and verify the AC compressor recall has been completed on pre-2023 cars.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete Opel dealer or authorized specialist records. Even though EVs need less servicing, documented history helps with any warranty claims.
-
Tires
Check tread depth and age. EVs wear front tires faster due to regenerative braking load and extra weight.
-
Body condition
Check for parking dings, wheel curb damage, and paint condition. These are common on city cars.
-
Test drive
Drive for at least 20 minutes. Test regenerative braking modes, heating/cooling, and all driver assists.
-
Test AC charging before purchase
This is the most important check. Plug the car into a Type 2 AC charger and verify it starts charging normally. If AC charging fails, the onboard charger may need replacement (€2,200+).
-
Check battery state of health
Request a battery health report from the dealer or use an OBD diagnostic tool. After 4 years and 50,000 km, expect 90-95% capacity remaining. Anything below 85% warrants investigation.
-
Verify AC compressor recall completed
Cars built October 2019 to November 2022 are affected by recall KGS/221078CO. This software update prevents the AC compressor from shutting down the entire powertrain. Contact Opel with the VIN.
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
AC compressor stator wiring — powertrain shutdown risk (Oct 2019 - Nov 2022, ref: KGS/221078CO)
Critical — verify completed
BSI software — loss of propulsion while driving (May 2022 - Mar 2023)
Critical — verify completed
Software conformity testing error (Oct 2019 - May 2022)
Verify completed
Turn indicator system malfunction (2019-2021)
Verify completed
Contact an Opel dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The AC compressor recall is particularly important as unpatched cars can lose all propulsion if the compressor fails while driving.
