The top-spec petrol 208 P21, typically found in GT Line and GT trims and usually paired with the Aisin-built EAT8 eight-speed automatic. Built on the CMP platform shared with the Opel Corsa F and Citroën C3, it combines sharp styling and a high-tech 3D i-Cockpit with the same 1.2 PureTech EB2 three-cylinder used across the range, tuned here to 130 hp. European Car of the Year 2020.

Common Problems
Oil-immersed timing belt degrades, shedding particles that clog oil galleries and VVT system · more· less
The 1.2 PureTech uses a timing belt that runs immersed in engine oil (wet belt). The P21 uses an improved Gen3 belt material compared to pre-2017 engines, but the fundamental design remains. Fuel dilution of the oil accelerates belt wear: unburnt fuel droplets slip past the piston rings and into the oil pan, creating an abrasive mixture. Belt fragments can block oil galleries, VVT valves, and the oil pickup strainer, leading to oil starvation. Stellantis has revised the replacement interval to approximately 100,000 km or 6 years. Belt replacement at an independent garage runs €800-1,000 (parts around €225 plus 4-6 hours labor). If belt debris has already caused VVT or oil system damage, costs rise to €1,500-2,500. From 2023, Stellantis switched the updated hybrid PureTech to a timing chain, acknowledging the weakness.
Carbon deposits clog piston oil control rings, allowing oil to burn at an accelerated rate · more· less
Many PureTech owners report oil consumption of 0.5-1 litre per 1,000 km, well above Peugeot's stated maximum of 0.25 L per 1,000 km. The root cause is carbon buildup on the piston oil control rings, which prevents them from scraping oil effectively. Short trips, gentle driving, and low-rpm city use make it worse because the engine rarely reaches optimal operating temperature — a particular risk for GT-Line 130 cars used mostly in town. Mild cases can be managed with shorter oil change intervals (every 7,500 km) and regular motorway use. Severe cases need piston ring cleaning or replacement (€1,500-2,500); worst cases, engine replacement at about €4,000 and up. The Stellantis PureTech compensation platform (opened 2024) covers qualifying repairs up to 10 years / 180,000 km with full service history.
HPFP can fail, causing rough running, power loss, and fault code P0087 · more· less
The high-pressure fuel pump can fail prematurely on the 130, most often between 60,000 and 100,000 km. Symptoms include rough running, hesitation under load, the engine warning light, and fault code P0087 (low rail pressure). OEM pump parts cost €350-500, with 3-5 hours labor adding €200-400. Some owners report Peugeot contributing to repair costs on cars under 6 years old and under 100,000 km. Using quality fuel and keeping to service intervals helps prevent premature wear.
Aisin-built EAT8 develops harsh 1-2 shifts and low-speed shudder when fluid is neglected · more· less
The EAT8 gearbox fitted to most PureTech 130 cars is the Aisin AW F8F35. It is generally reliable, but Peugeot specifies the fluid as a so-called ‚lifetime fill', which in practice shortens torque-converter life. Typical symptoms after 80,000-120,000 km include shudder under light throttle at 40-70 km/h, a perceptible flare on 1-2 upshifts, or hunting on gradients. A gearbox oil service (€200-350 at a specialist) often resolves mild cases. A new torque converter or valve body runs €1,500-2,500. Insisting on a gearbox oil change every 60,000-80,000 km is the single best preventive step.
Touchscreen freezes, goes black, or reboots randomly while driving · more· less
The P21's 7-inch or 10-inch touchscreen freezes, goes black, or reboots spontaneously on many cars. The infotainment cooling fan can lose contact and stop working, which makes the unit overheat and shut down in direct sunlight. Temporary fixes include pulling fuse 18 for a minute or a long press on the phone button. Software updates from Peugeot address some issues but persistent failures need head unit replacement (€500-800 at a dealer). Many owners resolve it by just replacing the cooling fan (€100-150).
Integrated electric water pump or thermostat housing develops a coolant leak after 70,000+ km · more· less
The PureTech uses an electric water pump with an integrated thermostat housing. The pump seal can fail through corrosion and coolant contamination, and the plastic housing can develop micro-cracks. Symptoms include low coolant warnings, poor cabin heating, or coolant pooling under the car. The integrated design means the whole unit typically has to be replaced: parts around €300-400 plus 4-5 hours labor. More common after 70,000 km. Peugeot has revised the thermostat housing design in later production.
Direct injection causes carbon deposits on intake valves, reducing power and smoothness · more· less
As a direct-injection engine, the PureTech 130 sprays fuel into the cylinders rather than onto the intake valves, so valves miss the normal ‚fuel wash' cleaning. Carbon builds up on the valve faces over time, especially with short-trip or city driving. Symptoms: rough idle, hesitation, mild power loss, slightly higher fuel use. Walnut blasting at a specialist costs €400-800 and is typically needed between 80,000 and 120,000 km.
Gasoline particulate filter clogs with predominantly short-trip driving, triggering warnings · more· less
The PureTech 130 is fitted with a gasoline particulate filter (GPF) to meet Euro 6d standards. Like a diesel DPF, it needs regeneration through sustained higher-load driving. Predominantly short urban use triggers a ‚particle filter' warning. A 20-30 minute motorway drive normally clears it. Forced regeneration at a dealer costs €200-400; severe blockage can push replacement to €1,000-1,500. This is a usage-pattern issue, not a design defect.
Quick and well-equipped, but the wet belt PureTech and EAT8 need careful maintenance
The 208 PureTech 130 is the most appealing petrol 208 to drive, but it inherits every weak point of the EB2 engine family: wet timing belt degradation, oil consumption, carbon buildup and occasional HPFP failure. Most examples also have the Aisin EAT8 automatic, which is reliable when serviced but unforgiving if the ‚lifetime' gearbox fluid is actually left for life. The safest buys have complete Peugeot service history, evidence of shortened oil change intervals, a documented timing belt replacement at or before 100,000 km, and ideally a gearbox oil change. The Stellantis PureTech compensation platform covers qualifying engine repairs up to 10 years / 180,000 km.
