Toyota Camry 2.5 Hybrid XV70

2019-2024Last updated: March 2026

2019-2024 · 2.5 A25A-FXS hybrid (218 hp) 4-cylinder Atkinson-cycle petrol + electric motor, eCVT

The eighth-generation Camry replaced the Avensis in Europe in 2019, offered exclusively as a 2.5 hybrid. It shares the proven A25A-FXS engine and eCVT with the RAV4 Hybrid, backed by Toyota's decades of hybrid experience. Low European sales mean limited used supply, but also fewer reported issues. The hybrid system significantly reduces brake wear and fuel costs, making this one of the cheapest large sedans to run day-to-day.

Proven hybrid powertrain from RAV4 Very low fuel and brake costs
Coolant bypass valve prone to fail Outdated infotainment system
Buy if: You want a spacious, fuel-efficient sedan with low running costs and Toyota hybrid reliability.
Avoid if: You need a modern infotainment experience or plan to leave the car parked for weeks at a time (12V battery drain).

Toyota Corolla E210 Hybrid 2019-present Same hybrid concept in a smaller package. Even lower running costs. Corolla avoids the coolant bypass valve issue that affects the Camry's 2.5-litre engine. Skoda Superb Mk3 2.0 TDI 2015-2024 Roomier diesel alternative. Higher maintenance costs due to DPF, AdBlue, and DSG complexity. More readily available on the used market. Honda Accord 2.0 i-VTEC (8th Gen) 2008-2015 Older but proven Honda reliability. No hybrid complexity but significantly higher fuel costs. More readily available used. Toyota RAV4 Hybrid XA50 2019-present Same engine and hybrid system in SUV form. RAV4 has additional issues (roof rail leaks, HV cable corrosion) that the Camry sedan avoids. Toyota Auris Mk2 1.8 Hybrid 2012-2018 Older, smaller Toyota hybrid. Even fewer issues than the Camry but less powerful. One of the cheapest hybrids to own long-term.
Known Issues most common first
Coolant bypass valve failure €400 - 900
Electronic coolant bypass valve sticks or leaks, triggering engine warning light · more· less
The engine coolant bypass valve (part #16671-25010 / 16260-F0021) controls coolant flow between the engine and cabin heater core. It can leak or fail electronically, typically between 40,000 and 80,000 km. Symptoms include an 'Engine Maintenance Required' warning, poor cabin heating while the air conditioning is running, and in some cases visible coolant loss. Toyota launched Customer Support Program 24TE04 covering free replacement on vehicles manufactured through early 2021. Out-of-warranty replacement costs approximately €400-600 for parts and labour at a dealer, or €250-400 at an independent specialist using aftermarket parts. A class-action lawsuit has been filed in the US. If coolant loss goes unnoticed and the engine overheats, secondary damage can be significantly more expensive.
12V auxiliary battery drain €150 - 300
Small 12V battery drains within days if car sits idle, preventing hybrid system start-up · more· less
The Camry Hybrid uses a compact AGM 12V battery that powers the electronics needed to boot the hybrid system. A parasitic draw of approximately 300 mA from the Data Communication Module (DCM) and other electronics can drain this battery within 3-7 days of the car sitting unused. Toyota released firmware update TSB00089-21 to reduce parasitic draw on 2020-2021 models. Replacement batteries cost €150-250 fitted, and owners typically replace them every 3-5 years depending on usage patterns. Cars manufactured from late 2022 onward show fewer reports. A quality trickle charger is recommended if the car sits for extended periods.
EGR cooler degradation €500 - 1,200
Internal corrosion allows coolant to leak into the intake manifold · more· less
The A25A-FXS engine's EGR cooler can suffer internal corrosion from chlorine contamination in the coolant, allowing coolant to be drawn into the engine through the EGR system. Symptoms include a sweet coolant smell from the exhaust, gradually dropping coolant level, and white exhaust smoke. A TSB exists for EGR cooler replacement. The issue typically appears after 80,000-120,000 km. Repair costs €500-1,200 depending on whether the inlet manifold also requires replacement. Using Toyota-specified super long-life coolant and maintaining regular coolant change intervals helps prevent this issue.
Brake booster vacuum pump failure (2019 models) €0 - 800
Premature wear of vane cap inside brake vacuum pump reduces braking power · more· less
Toyota recalled approximately 227,000 2018-2019 Camry models globally because the vane cap inside the brake booster vacuum pump was wearing prematurely. If the pump fails, the driver experiences increased brake pedal effort and a 'Low Braking Power' warning. This is a safety-critical recall and Toyota dealers will inspect and replace the pump free of charge. Most affected vehicles have already been repaired, but always verify completion via VIN check. If an unrecalled car develops this issue out of warranty, repair costs approximately €600-800.
Active grill shutter malfunction €200 - 500
Debris or actuator failure causes grill shutters to stick, triggering a warning message · more· less
The active grill shutters behind the front bumper improve aerodynamics and engine warm-up, but the flaps can get stuck due to road debris, ice, or actuator failure. A dashboard warning message appears when the system detects a malfunction. In many cases (roughly 60% according to repair reports), the fix is simply cleaning debris from the shutter mechanism. If the actuator motor has failed, replacement costs €200-400 for parts and labour. The issue is more common in winter or on cars driven on gravel roads.
Infotainment system freezing €0 - 500
Touchscreen occasionally freezes or reboots, especially with Android Auto connected · more· less
The Entune/Toyota Touch infotainment system can freeze, go black for several minutes, or enter a reboot loop. This occurs more frequently when Android Auto or Apple CarPlay is connected. In most cases, a long press of the power-volume knob (12 seconds) resets the system. A dealer software update often resolves the issue permanently. In rare cases the head unit needs replacement, costing approximately €400-500. The infotainment system in the XV70 is widely regarded as dated compared to competitors, but it is functionally adequate.
One of the most reliable large sedans available
The Camry XV70 Hybrid benefits from Toyota's fourth-generation hybrid system, shared with the RAV4 and Avalon. The A25A-FXS engine and eCVT have proven durable across millions of vehicles worldwide. The main unexpected cost is the coolant bypass valve, which Toyota has partially addressed through a customer support program. Regenerative braking dramatically extends brake life, and the hybrid system reduces engine wear during city driving. With proper maintenance, 200,000+ km is realistic without major powertrain issues.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 2 more checksShow less
  • Check 12V battery voltage
With the hybrid system off, the 12V battery should read above 12.4V. Below 12.2V indicates a weak battery or parasitic drain issue. Ask when the 12V battery was last replaced.
  • Inspect for dashboard rattle and interior trim quality
Drive over uneven surfaces and listen for dashboard or A-pillar rattles. Some XV70 models have loose trim clips that cause persistent interior noise.
