Peugeot 206 1.6

1998-2009Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

1998-2009 · 1.6 16V (NFU / TU5JP4) 109 hp naturally aspirated petrol

A genre-defining late-1990s European supermini and one of Peugeot's best-selling models. The 1.6 16V (NFU / TU5JP4) is the sweet-spot petrol engine: smoother and livelier than the 1.1/1.4 8V units, with reasonable economy. Build quality is average at best and most surviving cars are now budget runabouts — price reflects that. Any 206 at this age is only worth buying with a tidy body, good service records, and a recently-changed timing belt.

Cheap parts, cheap to run Lively NFU 1.6 16V engine
Rear trailing arm bearings rot out BSI and switchgear electrics fragile
Buy if: You want a cheap, light, and fun city car as a second car or first car, and you are comfortable tackling small jobs yourself.
Avoid if: You need a car that will go years without attention — a neglected 206 nickels-and-dimes you with small electrical and suspension faults.

Common Problems
Cheap to buy, but expect a rolling list of small jobs
The Peugeot 206 1.6 is now a budget car that almost always needs something. The NFU engine itself is sound if the timing belt has been kept up, but the rear axle bearings, BSI electrics, rust and water ingress mean no example is completely trouble-free. Ownership only makes financial sense if you buy one at the right price — a tidy, documented car with a recent belt — and are prepared to tackle or pay for small issues as they arise.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering column electrical connector (early 1.6 16V cars) Verify completed
Rear seat belt anchorage (specific production dates) Verify completed
The 206 had a small number of recalls over its long production run; most have been actioned by now. Contact a Peugeot dealer with the VIN to confirm nothing outstanding on the specific car.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 206s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired
Extended warranty availability Third-party only, poor value on this age of car
All Peugeot 206s are now long outside their original 2-year factory warranty and the 12-year anti-perforation warranty. Third-party warranties exist but offer limited real-world value given the car's age and value.

↔ Also consider

Peugeot 206 1.4 1998-2009 Same chassis, same weak points (rear axle, BSI). The 1.4 8V is less lively but a touch simpler — the 1.6 16V costs a bit more to maintain. Renault Clio II 1.2 1998-2005 Direct rival from the same era. Clio II is broadly similar on reliability but has its own electrical gremlins and injector pack issues. Opel Corsa C 1.2 2000-2006 Simpler GM platform, generally fewer electrical niggles than the 206. Timing chain engine, no belt change worry. Citroën C3 Mk2 1.4 HDi 2009-2016 PSA platform sibling, one generation newer. Shares the fragile BSI architecture but bodywork holds up better than the 206. Toyota Yaris XP90 1.0 VVT-i 2005-2011 Noticeably more reliable alternative. Timing chain engine, better electrics, no rear axle bearing issue. Less fun but far less trouble.
