The first fully electric Opel Astra, built on Stellantis' EMP2 platform and sharing its drivetrain with the Peugeot e-308. A conventional-looking compact hatchback (also available as Sports Tourer estate) with a 54 kWh NMC811 battery providing roughly 270-350 km real-world range and 100 kW DC fast charging. Running costs are low, service intervals are simple, and the electric drivetrain is mechanically straightforward.
Low routine maintenance costs
Practical hatchback/estate body
OBC failure risk on early builds
Modest 100 kW DC charging speed
Buy if: You want a practical electric hatchback with low running costs and can verify AC charging works correctly before purchase.
Avoid if: You need fast DC charging for regular long trips or are looking at an early 2023 build that may still carry the Mahle onboard charger.

Common Problems
Mahle 11 kW AC charger can fail completely, preventing all home and public AC charging · more· less
The most significant known issue across Stellantis electric vehicles. The Mahle-manufactured 11 kW three-phase onboard charger has a documented failure pattern that renders AC (Type 2) charging impossible — affected cars can only DC fast charge until repaired. Replacement costs €2,200-3,800 including dealer coding, and the unit cannot be sourced from salvage vehicles as it requires pairing to the car. Stellantis extended the OBC warranty to 4 years from April 2021. Importantly, the Astra Electric launched in 2023, by which time Stellantis was transitioning to the improved VMAX-manufactured OBC. Early 2023 builds (March-August) may still have the Mahle unit, while later production is widely reported to use the more reliable VMAX unit. When buying used, always test AC charging before finalizing the purchase. If AC charging fails or is intermittent, factor in the replacement cost.
Software bug can cause the car to move in the wrong direction when starting on a slope · more· less
A recall (KBA code: KIM) affecting 1,466 Opel Astra Electric vehicles built between March and August 2023. A communication failure between the motor control unit and body control unit can cause incorrect interpretation of immobilizer data, potentially making the vehicle move backward instead of forward when starting from a parked position on a slope. The fix is a 20-minute free software update at an authorized dealer. This is an Astra Electric-specific issue not shared with other Stellantis EVs. Verify with the VIN that this recall has been completed before purchase.
12V AGM battery drains within days if the car sits unused, accelerated by connected apps · more· less
Like other Stellantis EVs, the Astra Electric draws a parasitic current even when off. The MyOpel connected app polling the car can accelerate the drain further. Some owners report the 12V battery dying within 3-5 days of inactivity. The 12V AGM battery costs €150-250 for the part plus €50-100 for dealer fitting and coding. Using a trickle charger or driving regularly prevents the issue. Expect to replace the 12V battery every 3-4 years, which is faster than typical ICE cars due to the constant electronic load on the small auxiliary battery.
Touchscreen locks up, navigation gives conflicting directions, keyless entry can stop working · more· less
The Astra L's infotainment system can freeze, go completely black, or become unresponsive to touch input. Long-term test cars have exhibited keyless entry malfunctions where the car refuses to unlock automatically when approached with the key fob — an issue that persisted even after multiple dealer visits. Software updates can resolve some issues but not all. The infotainment firmware update process itself has caused problems for some owners, with the system getting stuck in update mode. A forced reboot (holding the power button for 10-15 seconds) usually resolves screen freezes. In rare cases the infotainment module needs replacement (€200-300 at a specialist).
Front suspension wishbone bolts may have been incorrectly tightened during production · more· less
A recall affecting Astra L models built between July and November 2022. The front suspension wishbone bolts may not have been tightened to the correct torque during production. The fix involves checking and re-torquing the bolts at an authorized dealer, free of charge. This affects all Astra L variants, not just the Electric. The recall was announced January 2023. Verify completion with the VIN — improperly torqued bolts could theoretically lead to suspension failure.
Simple drivetrain, but early builds carry OBC and software risks
The Astra Electric's motor and battery have proven reliable so far, with no widespread reports of drive motor or battery pack failures. The main financial risk is the Mahle onboard charger, though later 2023+ builds with the improved VMAX unit reduce this concern significantly. The Astra-specific ECU recall (slope direction reversal) is a software fix with no cost. Always test AC charging before purchase, verify recall status, and budget for 12V battery replacement every few years.
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
ECU communication fault — vehicle may move in wrong direction on slope (March-August 2023 production, ref: KIM)
Critical — verify completed
Front suspension wishbone bolts — incorrect torque (July-November 2022 production)
Verify completed
Fuel line leak and fire risk (January 2024 - April 2025 production, ref: KUU, affects combustion variants)
Not applicable to Electric
Contact an Opel dealer with the VIN to verify all applicable recalls have been completed. The ECU communication recall (KIM) is particularly important for early 2023 Astra Electric models, as it can cause the car to move in an unexpected direction on a slope.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years)
Expired on early 2023 models, active on 2024+ models
High-voltage battery (8 years / 160,000 km)
Active on all used examples
Onboard charger extended warranty (4 years)
Active on all current used examples
Rust perforation warranty (8 years)
Active on all current used examples
The 8-year high-voltage battery warranty covers capacity dropping below 70%. The OBC extended warranty (4 years from first registration) was introduced by Stellantis in April 2021 and covers the onboard charger regardless of variant. Since the Astra Electric launched in 2023, all current used examples should still be within the 4-year OBC warranty. Verify exact coverage dates with your Opel dealer.
